DIY

The advent of the DIY (do it yourself) has risen significantly in the age of the internet. The information that is needed to do small or large construction projects by them is readily obtainable by anyone who has an internet connection or a library card.

Of course, the DIYs have its own pros and cons:

Pros

  • DIY jobs can save you money – when you do not have to pay for costs of labor, the overall cost of the project goes down.
  • Complete control – when you are the one who is completely in charge of the project, you don’t have to stifle your creativity or your plans. A lot of the time construction firms employ architects and engineers that have very specified ways of doing certain things. Your plans may end up being subject to their processes.

Cons

  • Quality – when you aren’t particularly trained to handle construction projects, the overall quality of the result can suffer quite a bit. Don’t be surprised if the end results has an amateurish feel to it when you are a complete novice when it comes to construction.
  • Project Duration – when you are subject to trial and error, the overall completion of the project may take longer than initially desired. After all, you are solely responsible for the completion time of the construction.

Hiring a Construction Firm

Going with a construction firm is one of the options pursued by the people who want something built. Here are some of its pros and cons:

Pros

  • Professional Quality – established construction firms rely on providing clients with superior quality results.
  • Contractual Protection – good firms will always protect themselves and their clients with a contract. Should there be any delays or issues, the contract should protect the client.

Cons

  • Expense – construction jobs by construction firms will cost you a pretty penny. You are after all paying for labor costs, materials, hardware, permits, and so many other things.
  • Fraud – this is something that can happen to pretty much anyone. There are fraudulent firms out there that can fleece you out of a lot of money and leaving you with shoddy workmanship.

So when you’re thinking of building something—anything—you need to have a frank conversation with yourself and with other people involved. Always consider both the pros and cons of DIY and hiring construction firms.

If you were to build something, would you DIY or would you hire a construction company?
